About

The client is a large, publicly traded American energy company with thousands of employees.

The Challenge

The client knew the benefits of automation. With an established Robotic Process Automation (RPA) Center of Excellence (CoE) identifying transformation efforts throughout the organization for the past several years, they were no strangers to developing software robots (or “bots”) to learn and execute rules-based business processes.

However, they had been working with a large consulting company, that had not been meeting expectations.

Using large teams, they burdened the client with large amounts of ineffective code and provided limited support for errors once the project engagement ended. With a high bot failure rate and the amount of code involved, supporting the bots when they encountered novel scenarios proved to be a “maintenance issue that was not sustainable."

When it was time to upgrade from an old version to a newer version of their automation software platform in 2020, the client’s RPA CoE decided to try out a new partner: BP3.

The Solution

BP3 and the client began to work together during an initial migration period of three months, allowing the client to test out BP3 as a collaborator. While many parts of the migration and software update were automated, there ended up being a large amount of manual work required to clean up the code.

During the migration, BP3 saw an opportunity to help ensure that the implementation and documentation complied with known best standards and practices. Providing expertise as a consultant, BP3 asked the client’s team about their choices to help review, broaden, and improve their RPA projects. After the implementation of the migration, BP3 worked closely with the client to ensure the bots were working as intended.

“Once the coding for the bot is done and pushed into production, after the first couple executions, it requires monitoring to make sure any exceptions are handled properly. BP3 circled back and provided evaluation of the exceptions. They understood why we wanted to do the cleanup and helped us to do the extra work,” says the client’s RPA CoE Product Manager.

BP3 was willing to put in the work to ensure the migration was a success, from strategy and execution to testing.

“They include the whole package. Not just doing the bot development, but going from business process to development, to UAT (User Acceptance Testing), and even hypercare afterwards. So we won’t have the problem we had with the other firm.”
